Official Dart Rules

The most traditional dart game is called "01." Since this is the easiest game for novice players to learn,
knowing the rules and practicing your throw are the way to begin enjoying darts.

Object of "01"
For a game of "01" the object of the game is reducing your score to zero and to be the first to do so. "01"
refers to the initial number of points that each player has at the beginning of the game.
For instance, a general beginning score at tournaments is 501. House rules might also begin games with
scores like 301, 601, 801, and 1001. Team play is common for higher beginning scores.

Throwing in Turns
As players take their turns throwing (each turn involves thrown three darts), they subtract the points from their beginning score.
Bounce-offs and darts that completely miss the dart board
give zero points and cannot be retrieved or re-thrown during that turn.
Once all three
darts are thrown, the player retrieves all of his or her darts and tallies a current score before anyone else takes a turn.

Finishing at Zero
In order to finish the game, a player's score must reach exactly zero, and the winning dart must contact a "double"
section on the dartboard
(the slender scoring section along the outside of the dartboard or the bull's-eye).
Winning is also called "going out" and it can be the most difficult part of the dart game.

A Scoring Sample
For a scoring example, say a player has 18 points remaining.
That player could hit a double-9 to get the correct score needed to win.
However, if a player has a odd number score, he or she would need to continue throwing to bring the score
to an even number (doubling out is impossible with a number that cannot be evenly divided.

Advanced Jargon
You'll understand the game better (and have a lot more fun) when you become familiar with the phrases particular to playing darts.

For instance, throwing a score of 151 or higher in a single turn is called a "high ton," while scoring 100 to 150 points in a single
turn is called a "ton." In addition, if you throw three bulls-eyes in one turn, you have just performed a "hat trick."

Like many games, you need to learn the basics of dart games along with basic dart rules to move on to the many varieties available
(and the various dart games that are completely separate from "01"). With so much variety - and with so much tension riding on the
throw of a dart - it's no mystery that darting is a favorite past time for millions of people around the world.
